Not Just for Christmas

This is the wiki homepage of the research project 'Not Just for Christmas': Consumption, Popular Culture and Religious Observance.

- Have you ever wondered why we buy charity Christmas cards, but not charity Birthday cards?
- Do you care how your Christmas turkey was farmed, but not about the meal you had today?
- Are you concerned about upgrade culture, new gadgets and product packaging, but only at Christmas?
- Are you concerned that the messages of Christmas are being lost, but that no-one can do more than talk about it?

It's getting easier to make ethical decisions at Christmas, with charity Christmas cards, no-gift options, Fair Trade foods, and other ways to 'opt out' of the seasonal period of overeating and over damaging. Christmas is increasingly a time when we are more likely to think about the environment because we are suddenly faced with gourmet foods and binliners full of wrapping and packaging. However, many of these decisions are not so easy to make at other times of the year, and are even less likely to be everyday decisions! But if we know that we are able to make these decisions at Christmas time, then maybe they have something to do with the 'Christmas spirit'? Maybe they can even be used to help us understand how we can make ethical choices in consumption every day...?

Session 1 Traditions New and Old

Beginning with beginnings for our first presentation of the day, Susan Roll, author of Toward the Origins of Christmas, spoke about debates over the origins of Christmas as a feast, and highlighted some of the dualisms brought out in the controversies, such as pagan/Christian, world/spirit. Though it may be easy for preachers to condemn the ‘commercialisation’ of Christmas and to rely on such dualisms to dissociate from a considered reflection on themselves and the society they live in, there may also be hope in employing the Christmas story to transcend simple and often discriminatory dualisms.

Sustainability and community were strong themes in Justin Carter’s presentation on his commissioned Public Art project in Bybrua, Norway (2008). Human ‘pedalpower’ from volunteer participants was harnessed to light a neglected pedestrian underpass, allowing for the production of energy within a community, rather than the consumption of energy. This poignantly highlighted for the group the potential and challenge to re-imagine everyday practices and to critique excesses which are characteristically part of the Christmas festive season.

Session 2 The Christmas Spirit in Practice and Representation

The afternoon session papers focused our discussions on some of the spiritual aspects of Christmas expressed through non-religious texts and practices, particularly as they open out to become everyday phenomena.

Niamh Doheny's presentation began by looking at three key Christmas films (It's a Wonderful Life, The Bishop's Wife and The Santa Clause). Whilst these 'classics' are often seen as rooted in the particular message of Christmas which leaves the theological far behind (notwithstanding supernatural elements), they present problems which are only resolved by acts that might otherwise occur in the everyday.

Mary's saving the day at the end of It's a Wonderful Life is through her suggestion of the powerful act of potlatch (also picked up by Linda Ruth Williams here) during a run on the banks, demonstrating for Doheny the everyday dichotomy that "while ethics and community-spirited acts are valuable, and even essential, without the means to consume, people are powerless and at the mercy of the immoral."

This relation of the spiritual to acts of consumption (related also to small-gift giving) was taken up by Deirdre Shaw (right) as she reported on her research into small gift consumption as an example of the conversion of the religious to the spiritual in everyday consumption. Discussion particularly focused on the spiritual investment in small, mass produced gifts intended as feel-good charms with very little value, but which can gather considerable importance despite their lowly status. Deirdre introduced a project with new and ambitious aims - particular in looking at how new consumers use ideas of the spiritual to narrate their self-identity and question their own consumption practices.

Workshop theme: 'Not Just for Christmas'

This workshop turned some of the discussion from July into 'flashlight' issues, and focused on how ethical issues faced at Christmas might inform us about everyday consumption.

Over two days, we worked with the following questions:

Has society achieved something that could be built upon for having an ethical Christmas which could be sustained in everyday life?
What do people do? Is it that people who are concerned with ethical consumption are a bit more visible at Christmas?
What is it that validates Christmas and what are the intellectual underpinnings of a shared concept such as the ‘spirit of Christmas’?
How can positive moral impulses, highlighted by Christmas consumptive practices, be sustained in ordinary life?
How do we deal with the ‘largeness’ and otherness of these problems without feeling powerless?
How can we work towards the creation of new traditions which overlay existing layers and also engage with current consumptive practices of Christmas?
How can these be useful in responding to contemporary issues and imagining a different future for the practice of Christmas which continues in everyday life?

Session 4 Christmas as Culture Machine

The workshop's last full session explored the role of Christmas as a culture machine, an idea which emerged from George Mckay's presentation on his research into pop music and especially music festivals. George presented a series of ideas which had emerged from his ongoing study of cultures of resistance, spanning disability and punk music and 'radical gardening'. When talking about Glastonbury as a culture machine, it became clear that this was indeed how we understand Christmas - as much as ordinary people as we do scholars. Christmas is expected to reflect and even concentrate our everyday activities into clearly identifiable practices, decisions and responses. A television scholar might add to this how Christmas serves the same function as a soap opera, offering us heightened awareness of decisions we make every day (perhaps that's why Christmas episodes always have to have a big cliffhanger).

The link to popular music was taken up by Bob Davis (right), who richly told the story of the development of Irving Berlin's 'White Christmas' as a non-Christian response to the success of the carol 'Silent Night'. Tracing the material development of the song (as one that made use of the particular microphones suited to 'crooning'), Bob explored the soundscape created by even the most famous and most-often heard Crosby recording. The paper charted the development of a real break in popular music from the religious in presenting the mood, feeling or experience of Christmas to the public.

Session 3 The Cost of Christmas Products

The evening session included a presentation by Bruce Peter, followed by dinner and a crucial activity of Christmas day - locking people together to play family games.

Bruce Peter is a maritime historian conducting empirical and archival research on recent and contemporary freight and ferry transport, particularly the expansive and secretive Maersk lines. His research on the growth of this invisible but necessary industry for mass consumption reveals the extraordinary scale of production and distribution, and the ways in which it is neglected as having an impact on the environment. Christmas as a celebration allowed Bruce to talk about the global impact of the plastics industry (containers of plastic toys 'fall off' their ships and bob on the oceans for years) amongst other facets of consumption, often only reported at this time of year.

After dinner participants took the opportunity to relax with a range of retro games as are often brought out in shops around Christmas. As well as returning to some of the issues explored in the July workshop, the games allowed the group to consider the ways in which Christmas is a manufactured event plucked from the everyday and given shape by camaraderie in the face of overwhelming odds: such as understanding the rules of a old board game.

Terence Norton Canes M6 Services, Northbound I will be challenging everyone to make a better world for when I grow up. Oh, and I will be wearing reusable nappies.
NameJane Allan Location 150 Tanjong Katong Road,Singapore Well I am sure mine may not be very ethical at all.However,I can I feel justify quite a lot of what I plan to do as ethical.I am going to Paris [by plane NOT green but will pay ethical surplus] to meet my ancient kids [31,29,27] and my cousins.We are staying in a hotel thus keeping the Parisian black underclass employed and in funds so they too can enjoy the Festive season.I will leave a good tip too.We will eat out and pay money to cafes ,restaurants and shops thus helping service workers to keep their jobs.We will not exchange ANY gifts as we all have too much stuff.If people stop spending at Christmas the subsistence workers in shops,restaurants and hotels will be made redundant and that is hardly ethical. I will walk a lot and enjoy the cold weather and drink vin chaud to keep me warm and ethically [ ho ho ho ]keep those cafe workers in a job. I plan to send Christmas Cards to all my friends that I never see .That will take ages and I think it is quite an ethical thing to do [in the very broad sense of the term]as it means I care and do not want to use distance as an excuse for forgetting the people I care about.
Alec Badenoch Leiden, Netherlands It's becoming increasingly clear that the things that are unethical about Christmas on a general and global level are also directly related to the personal feelings of guilt and annoyance that make me dread it. So ethical Christmas will begin with thinking about each 'Christmas' action and what makes it special, makes it matter, and makes it worth any negative effects (considered globally) it might have. And not doing it if it is not special, doesn't matter and isn't worth it. So: no crap throwaway token prezzies. No last-minute panicked extravagances. Exchanges will be about celebrating and strengthening relationships in ways that matter. The frivolous things that are part of that effort must come from a source that also does some good (fair trade, charity shop, etc.) but ultimately, the goal is to replace those things with time, celebration and communication. Once it is all done, the plan is to tot up the amount we have spent on Christmas (money, certainly, and ideally also time) and donate that or more over the course of the coming year toward improving the world beyond our network of friends and family.

Lesson plans for 3-11 year olds

Lesson plans for 11-16 year olds

- Using a photocopied map of the world (or a googlemap), ask students to plot the journey their Christmas present made from their home, back to the manufacturer, designer and source of the materials. How far back can they go?

Lesson plans for High School/Sixth Form students

- Ask students to think about what they want for Christmas, and then see if, using the Internet, encyclopedias etc., they can research where it comes from, who designed/manufactured/constructed it, what materials were used and where did they come from, what are the effects on the cities of manufacture.

Workshop plans for College/University students

- Film Studies: In groups, ask students to plot a 'classic' Christmas narrative, with each group taking a different environmental issue. Then swap the 'classic plots' and ask the groups to deconstruct each others using the theories of Propp, Bakhtin, or Deleuze.

- Contemporary Art: Brief students on Bourriaud's concept of artist as 'social engineer', then ask them to work out an intervention into Christmas shopping habits.

Bob Holman was Professor of Social Administration at the University of Bath before leaving to work with the Church of England's Children's Society, and independently, on the development of locally-run community projects in deprived areas of Bath and Glasgow. A prolific writer on community development and as a commentator, he is the author of Faith in the Poor. Back to the NJfC Advent Calendar	"Don't fly abroad at Christmas or any other time. Of course, some have to fly for business or to visit relatives. But most could avoid it. I have not done so for over 20 years and rarely fly within the UK."

He is the author of many books, including The Bible and Literature: A Reader, and The Sacred Desert: Religion, Literature, Art and Culture. Back to the NJfC Advent Calendar	"If, like me, you hate getting out of bed in the morning, and you have to get up at some unearthly hour to go to work, you might well be so bad tempered that other members of your family have long given up attempting to have a civilized breakfast with you. This means that every morning we have to boil the kettle, use the toaster, wash the dishes separately - for me and then for everyone else in the family. At Christmas, however, we all (and especially me) make a great effort to cheerful and merry - and we have a sociable breakfast all together. This need not involve great conversations - it just means we are generally much nicer to each other and smile a bit more. It also means that we don't have to boil the kettle twice, use the toaster more than once - and can all wash up at one go using only one washing up bowl (dishwashers are highly unecological!)"

Alison Phipps is Professor of Languages and Intercultural Studies at the University of Glasgow where she is Director of the Centre for Studies in Faith, Culture and Education. We are not easily reduced to prayer. Prayer is an activity which, at its most basic, takes us out of the production-consumption system. Whilst we have churches, temples, mosques, cathedrals in which people come together in prayer, we also find prayer as a simple, intimate act, stilling us into an attitude of gratitude and concern. Through prayer we move beyond a belief in ourselves as self-contained individuals whose abilities or ceaseless activities or creativity can solve the problems we face. Instead, and in prayer, we remember to cease our strivings and pause; we practise humility, we lament our overwhelming collective violence towards one another and towards this good, green earth; we are moved from strength into vulnerability; we recognise our weakness in the face of overwhelming odds. We say thank you for what we have been given, we open ourselves out from guilt into grace and we engage in perhaps one of the most carbon neutral practices of life we have. I would want people to pray."
