"There are many ways to have an ethical, green, or sustainable Christmas. If there was one thing you would want people to do every day as well, what would it be?"

Richard Holloway

Dr Richard Holloway is former Primus of the Scottish Episcopal Church and retired Bishop of Edinburgh.
He has served as a member of the Human Fertilisation and Embryology Authority, and the Broadcasting Standards Commission. He became Chairman of the Scottish Arts Council in 2005. He is the author of numerous books, including Godless Morality and, most recently, Between the Monster and the Saint.
"It is not widely known that there is, in fact, a tiny fragment of text called the Green Codex that features an ancient gloss on the story of the wise men who brought gifts to Bethlehem for the baby Jesus. Bethlehem, prompted by Joseph, had initiated a recycling centre, to which, after the
Nativity, he took the wrappings and packaging of the three gifts. The gold had come in a tin, so into the tin unit it went. The frankincense had come
in a cardboard box, and it duly went into the receptacle so designated. The myrrh came in a bottle, a green bottle, and it was duly popped into the green bottle hole in the bottle bank. It is known that the Holy Family was green conscious from the beginning, and so should all families be: recycle your waste carefully, and keep our planet clean..."
