"There are many ways to have an ethical, green, or sustainable Christmas. If there was one thing you would want people to do every day as well, what would it be?"

Isabelle Szmigin
Isabelle Szmigin is Professor of Marketing at the Birmingham Business School, University of Birmingham, and has published in a wide range of academic journals including Psychology and Marketing, The European Journal of Marketing, the Journal of Marketing Management and the Journal of Business Research. Her research interests lie in the area of conceptualising consumer behaviour and also services and relationship marketing. Her book Understanding the Consumer examines the complexity and unpredictability of consumers in the marketplace of the twenty first century.
Isabelle has been part of an ESRC (Identities and Social Action Programme) funded project investigating the process of young adults' identity construction in relation to the branding and consumption of alcohol. From 2008 she will be involved in another ESRC project entitled 'Negotiating managed consumption: Young people, branding and social identification processes' with colleagues from the University of Bath.
" Of course there are lots of things we can do to improve our lives and the lives of others, just taking the time to smile at people in the bus or train queue can make us and them feel better. But we all need to be more conscious in our actions. Being aware is a good first step to doing better - be aware of buying too much food, be aware of what you throw away and be aware of what you say to people. Just take a little time to think about what you are doing."
